Canon G12

I have been looking at the Canon G12. This is a Canon point and shoot size, with features that rival an SLR. It comes with the basic features and some creative modes. It also has several filters, one being the recently popular tilt-shift lens one. This filter makes subjects in your photographs and videos look like miniatures.
The G12 also has an electronic viewfinder that is very rare on cameras this size. If you are looking for a great point and shoot ( mini pro like camera), you should consider the Canon G12.

  1. Jerry I have several Canon cameras. My main go to camera is my 7D. However, I purchased the G12 shortly after it became avaliable. One of the functions I was interested in was the HDR. I use the same HDR program you use and have really done well with it. The built in program in the G12 is limiting. It does okay. You can not beat a true HDR stand alone program in my opinion. As you stated you can use the G12 HDR program and then clean it up in Photoshop or any other program.

Now to the G12. In my opinion each camera has good points and weak points. It all depends on how you are going to use it. I just can not shoot wildlife and action shots with a G12. An SLR is essential in that area, for its speed and lack of shutter lag time, multiply specific lens for different applications, etc. So far however, the G12 has become a great walk around camera, for general use. It has a lot of the functions of an SLR and to those familiar with Canon products it is very easy to get used to. I do a lot of manual shooting and the G12 allows a lot of control in that area. I find it very user friendly. For those that want a really good "point & shoot" style camera, that has a lot of the function of an SLR, I think this is a good choice. Leaving it in auto funcion produces great shots. In program mode, you can alomost shoot like in auto, but say without a flash function which I rarely use. You have easy control over ISO settings.

From my experience, most people will use point and shoot cameras, as just that. The G12 is not a pocket camera, but is not the size of a DSLR. It is a little pricey if you are not going to use what it is capable of. Again it depends on how you use a camera. For me it has become a back up camera to my 7D and I often take both with me.

  2. Ron thanks for the advice. I think I am going to get it. Like you say it can not replace the DSLR, but good small general purpose camera. I hear the optics are great. I also hear it has a miniature tilt/shift lens effect feature. I find that feature pretty cool and fun to use. I saw videos on youtube of the miniature effect and they are pretty neat and funny. Please let me know if you have used this feature and how it works. Your friend, Jerry LLanes
